On Friday, 08 October 2010 the Point Lisas Energy Association (PLEA) Health, Safety, Environment and Community Sub-Committee hosted its eleventh annual Teacher Training Programme at PLIPDECO House, Point Lisas. Teachers from over fourteen schools in the area of Couva and environs participated in the one-day workshop entitled, Environmental Aspects of the Industrial Estate Operations and Pollution.
This was the second phase of a three-module initiative aimed at educating teachers and in turn parents and students, on the various EHSS issues related the industrial environment and best practices in mitigation of these risks. A practical approach is taken to training participants on ways to respond in the event of an incident. Contact information for the relevant support services and first responders is also provided to teachers. NEC’s Shiva Bachoon, Health and Safety Officer, acted as MC as well as presenter, speaking on the topic, Chemical Safety in Homes and Schools.
The third module entitled, Fire Prevention, Emergency Response and the use of Fire Extinguishers was delivered on 10 November 2010. Teachers from over 14 schools participated in the workshop which included presentations and experiential sessions conducted by the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service. Once again, Shiva Bachoon of NEC doubled as MC and presenter, sharing relevant insights on the subject, The Importance of OSH Orientations.
At the end of the programme Ms. Danell Ramoutar of Milton Presbyterian School, NEC’s partner school, commented that she was impressed with the level of involvement and cooperation established between PLEA member companies and the schools in the area.
We look forward to the initiatives for 2011 and even greater interaction and involvement with Milton Presbyterian School and all other schools within the purview of the PLEA HSEC Committee.
