NEC is committed to conducting its operations safely. The EHSS Department therefore took on the challenge in earnest in 2010 to devise new initiatives to introduce safe practices at NEC and LABIDCO. Several measures which demonstrated the Company’s commitment to enhancing EHSS were introduced in 2010.
STOP and ASA
Safety Training Observation Program (STOP) and Advanced Safety Audits (ASA) were successfully rolled out to all staff at the supervisory and non-supervisory levels. These programs are designed to heighten employees’ awareness of the potential dangers that may exist in the work places. The system involves looking out for each other to create a safe work environment.
Risk Registers
In June 2010, departmental Heads developed risk registers for their respective areas in consultation with the EHSS Department. This process entailed careful examination of the processes involved in the department’s operations and an assessment of associated risks. Development of risk registers is an integral part in the process of emergency response and business continuity planning. We are pleased to report that over 150 quality STOPs were recorded in the period July – Dec 2010, and look forward to increasing this figure by at least 50% this year.
Safety & Security Training
The EHSS Department introduced a comprehensive Safety and Security Training program in 2010. Staff were exposed to mandatory training in the areas of International Shipping and Port Security, Personal Safety and Security, Eye-care and HIV Awareness; and optional training on several other subjects. The EHSS Department was encouraged by the level of participation of over 90% attendance and the leadership shown by supervisors in facilitating training sessions.
While there were some challenges in implementing the above initiatives, such as availability of financial and human resources, the benefits to be derived are more significant. A robust EHSS culture will be an essential ingredient in the advancement of NEC’s vision of global leadership in the development of sustainable energy-based industries.
Our plans for 2011 include the following:
-
EHSS Week 2011
-
Recognizing key world EHSS observances
-
Improving NEC’s EHSS Support and Control System, i.e. Permit-to Work and OSH Management System
-
Continued involvement with PLEA HSEC Committee and TTEMAS
Look out for the following EHSS observances this quarter:
