To Melamine - The Downstream Dream

Trinidad and Tobago is renowned as one of the world’s first gas-based economies. This country is home to a very successful gas sector producing derivatives such as Ammonia and Methanol. However since the first production of oil more than a century ago, we continue to face tangible challenges in diversifying the economy – that is until now!

In May 2010, Methanol Holdings Trinidad Limited (MHTL) commenced production of Melamine from its AUM1 plant, located in Point Lisas. The availability of Melamine on the local market finally gives T&T an opportunity to diversify its economy by developing energy based manufacturing industries.

Melamine, a derivative of ammonia, can be used in developing several manufacturing-based applications:

  • Melamine moulding compound
  •  Dinnerware
  • Laminates
  • Adhesives
  • Coatings
  • Plasticizers

National Energy Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (NEC) has been mandated by Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs to implement the Melamine initiative, which is expected to boost the local manufacturing sector through local and foreign investment. By leveraging synergies with the energy sector, this thrust provides a real opportunity for the transformation of energy based commodities into higher value products through manufacturing processes.

The benefits earned by these new types of industries are expected to include greater contributions to GDP from the manufacturing sector, higher levels of skilled and semi-skilled employment and opportunities for innovation in the development of energy based manufacturing products. Since these projects require relatively small investments, it would provide an opportunity for citizens of this country to participate and benefit from our resources in the energy sector.

On June 10th, the former Minister of Energy and Energy Affairs, Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan officially launched the Melamine business profiles to potential investors and other stakeholders at the Hyatt Regency Port of Spain. The profiles were prepared by NEC and will be a major part of the upcoming marketing drive undertaken by the company in the near future to develop these industries in Trinidad and Tobago.
