Building Communities Through Sport

Given the social history of communities surrounding the energy sector, the CSR Task Force has identified sport as an important vehicle for youth and community development. The Task Force has therefore developed a project called ‘Building Communities Through Sport’ which seeks to capitalise on the rich sporting legacy within region to enhance self-discipline and self-esteem among the youth. One aspect of the project is a community-based 2020 cricket competition under the patronage of former West Indies great Gus Logie and the current national captain Daren Ganga both sons-of-the-soil of ‘fenceline’ communities.. The participating communities include Cedros, Point Fortin, La Brea ,Rousillac, New Village and Union Village. On Saturday 21st May, Rousillac defeated Point Fortin by 26 runs to capture the 2011 title and qualify for a community-based ‘Big Four’ in June. Teams from the ‘ fenceline’ communities of Penal, Barrackpore and Pranz Gardens will join Rousillac for this tournament to be played at Guaracara Park.

Sport Ambaassador Daren Ganga presents the championship trophy to Saisnarine Singh captain of Rousillac.
