NEC developed a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy based on meetings and interventions that were held in the latter part of 2010 with residents of the Mayaro community. The strategy is focused on creating opportunities for the development of Mayaro by working in harmony with all stakeholders and focuses on developing and implementing programs that provide meaningful social and community development.
As a result of these interventions specific projects were identified by the community and adopted by NEC.
The Mafeking Government Primary School:
NEC assisted the Mafeking Government Primary School in preparation for the Junior Panorma 2011.
Rio Claro District Carnival Festivities:
NEC encourages culture and cultural development in the areas in which they do business and in the wider community. In that spirit NEC sponsored the Rio Claro District Carnival Festivities and donated prizes to the Junior Calypso Monarch Competition in Mayaro.
Mediation:
In NEC’s role as a good corporate citizen, the company acted as a mediator between the community of Mayaro/Guayaguayare and the Telecommunications Service of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) in the community’s effort to access land line and internet services, which is lacking in the area. TSTT is presently working on improving and installing the necessary infrastructure to ensure that residents can have access to the services they provide.
Guayaguayare R.C. Primary School Library:
In September 2010 the refurbishment of the Guayaguayare R.C. Primary School Library was identified as one the key projects that NEC would adopt for 2011.
Realizing the short and long term benefits of the project, including the sustainable development of the community and the boost of employment to the area, NEC, agreed to assist with the refurbishment. Work began in March 2010 and included the installation of two (2) AC units; shelving; tables and chairs; one (1) television; multimedia, two (2) desktop computers and educational software.
NEC enlisted the voluntary support of the Mayaro/ Guayaguayare Unemployed Organization and Concerned Citizens Group and the Guayaguayare Environmental Management and Specialized Services Company Limited who gave of their time and effort to ensure the completion of the project.
On Tuesday May 10th 2011, NEC officially opened the Guayaguayare R.C. Primary School’s Library at the school’s compound, situated at Warrick Street, New Lands Village, Guayaguayare under the patronage of the Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism and MP of Mayaro the Honourable Winston Peters.

The Honourable Winston Peters, Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism and MP for
Mayaro, reads to the pupils of the Guayaguayare R.C. Primary School at their new library.
La Savanne Community Center
NEC also supported the New Lands Village Council in their refurbishment of the La Savanne Community Center, located in Guayaguayare. In March 2011 NEC donated 17,000 to the refurbishment effort. Since then the Village Council, with the assistance of volunteers from the community, have painted the facility, fixed the ceiling and built a doorway separating the kitchen facility from the main area. Works on the Center are continuing and the area will be used for conducting workshops, as a homework centre and as a place to conduct community meetings.
