Welcome to NEC

National Energy Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NEC) was incorporated in 1979 to continue the work first started by the Coordinating Task Force in monetising the country’s natural gas resources and developing and managing industrial and marine infrastructure. NEC was involved in the construction and operation of the early petrochemical plants and the port and marine infrastructure which service all plants at the Point Lisas Industrial Estate.

In 1999, NEC [a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NGC)] became an independent entity within the NGC Group of Companies, with a mandate “to develop and manage suitable infrastructure in order to facilitate and promote the various activities relevant and appropriate to natural gas-related operations.”

In February 2004, NEC’s mandate was further expanded to include the facilitation and promotion of natural gas-based development. NEC’s mandate can be summarized as follows:

  • The conceptualization, promotion, development and facilitation of new energy-based and downstream industries in Trinidad and Tobago;
  • Identification and development of new industrial estates;
  • Identification and development of new industrial deep water ports to facilitate these estates;
  • Ownership and operation of marine and other infrastructural assets to facilitate all gas-based petrochemical and metal plants;
  • Development and management of La Brea Industrial Estate and Union Industrial Estate;
  • Towage and harbour operations;
  • Sustainable management of the environment.
 To Melamine - The Downstream Dream

Trinidad and Tobago is renowned as one of the world’s first gas-based economies. This country is home to a very successful gas sector producing derivatives such as Ammonia and Methanol. However since the first production of oil more than a century ago, we continue to face tangible challenges in diversifying the economy – that is until now!

In May 2010, Methanol Holdings Trinidad Limited (MHTL) commenced production of Melamine from its AUM1 plant, located in Point Lisas. The availability of Melamine on the local market finally gives T&T an opportunity to diversify its economy by developing energy based manufacturing industries.

Dry Docking of NEC QUEEN
The year 2010 marked 100 years since the first export cargo of crude oil was shipped by tanker at the Brighton port in La Brea. Two years before this historical event, T&T’s first commercial oil well was successfully drilled within the same vicinity. Those events will always qualify as two of the major achievements that have contributed to the economic development of Trinidad and Tobago.

Now a gas-based economy, T&T remains at the front line of global innovation, successfully having added petrochemicals such as Methanol and Ammonia to its downstream portfolio. So impressive have been the successes of this country’s energy sector that National Oil Companies and several West African countries have been seeking our expertise in developing their energy industries.

The decision to go further downstream and add greater value to the energy sector led to the construction of a world class fabrication yard on the NEC-managed LABIDCO Estate in La Brea. Since its establishment, the fabrication yard (owned by Trinidad Offshore Fabricators Unlimited (TOFCO)) has constructed many offshore platforms for several E&P companies-such as bpTT, BGTT, EOG Resources and BHP Billiton.

Recently, LABIDCO-home to the historic Brighton port-once again benefited from another innovative milestone: On Tuesday April 17th 2011, the “NEC Queen” (one of NEC’s 10 owned and operated vessels) set sail-approximately three weeks after docking for servicing and repairs. The dry docking exercise was successfully executed at the LABDICO fabrication yard.
